Hotel Location

Mention Barcelona and most people think of architect Antoni Gaudi and his fairytale-like creations including the Sagrada Família church and Parc Güell, several included in a UNESCO World Heritage site. But Spain's second largest city also has plenty of other must-dos: Walk down Los Ramblas, one of the most famous streets in the world, follow in the footsteps of Picasso and savor the local Catalan cuisine.

What to see:

Parc Güell

Spread over seven acres on a hill, this garden complex was designed by Antoni Gaudi and built between 1900 and 1914. After taking in some of the wonderful views, be sure to stop by the house where the famed architect lived from 1906 to 1926, now a museum housing many of his original works.

Museu Picasso

One of the most extensive displays of the art by Pablo Picasso is located in five adjoining medieval palaces in Barcelona's La Ribera quarter. More than 3,500 works make up the permanent collection, and the museum is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Barcelona.  Click here for more information.

Los Ramblas

Los Ramblas in central Barcelona is one of the most famous boulevards in the world. Besides plenty of places to shop and eat, visitors will also find a renowned opera house, a monument to Christopher Columbus, museums and the city's most iconic market, Mercat de la Boqueria.

Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família

Designed by Antoni Gaudí, construction on this large gothic-inspired Roman Catholic church began in 1883 and is still unfinished today. The church boasts grand, detailed facades and eight spires. Gaudí's original plan calls for 18.  Click here for more information.

Casa Milà "La Pedrera” House

Commonly known as "La Pedrera" (The Quarry), this apartment building was designed by Antoni Gaudí with massive, curvaceous walls that give a cave-like appearance. Don't miss the view from the spectacular rooftop.  Click here for more information.

Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)

With a collection that dates from the mid-20th century onward, this modern art museum focuses mostly on the Catalan artistic movements, but also includes work by modern international artists such as Klee, Broodthaers and Basquiat. Designed by American artist Richard Meier, the building is a work of modern art in itself.  Click here for more information.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

Barcelona's renowned opera house opened in 1847 and was such a symbol of the city's bourgeoisie that a member of the proletariat threw two bombs into the audience in 1891. A devastating fire in 1994 destroyed the original building, but the theater has since been restored to its former glory, and tours are offered.  Click here for more information.

Palau de la Música Catalana

Inaugurated in 1908, this concert hall was built for the Orfeó Catalá choral society. Designed by Lluis Doménech i Montaner, a contemporary of Gaudí, the UNESCO-recognized building is best known for its high embellished atrium.  Click here for more information.

Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

This museum was built for the 1929 World's Fair is the leading venue for Catalan art. The Romanesque paintings are particular must-sees, although the Gothic collection is also extensive.  Click here for more information.

Fundació Joan Miró

Joan Miró, one of Spain's greatest artists, is honored at this museum designed by one of his close friends, Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert. Some 10,000 works by the artist are part of the collection including paintings, graphics and sculptures. The rooftop terrace serves as a sculpture garden and affords wonderful views of the city.  Click here for more information.
