Explore Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve
Known as the birthplace of ziplining and often enveloped in low-hanging clouds and mist, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is a must-visit for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. While there are plenty of well-maintained trails that lead through the forest, many visitors opt for a guided tour, as the guides are local experts who can point out camouflaged animals, explain the unique ecosystem, point out the vast array of flora and fauna, and even give you tips on how to keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Resplendent Quetzal.
For a different, more unique perspective, you can walk on the famous hanging bridges, which provide astounding canopy-level views of the forest. If you're feeling super adventurous, go ahead and hop on a zipline and soar through the treetops!
Visit The Ficus La Raiz Tree
Tucked away in a forest near the town of Santa Elena, Ficus La Raiz is a captivating hidden gem, making it one of the best things to do in Monteverde. This site is famous for the towering fig tree that has grown its roots to form an incredible natural bridge over a small stream. The hike to see the tree is relatively short and easy.
There is a small fee for the most accessible, well-maintained trail (about $2 USD), but there is also a free, more adventurous path. Choose whichever is more in your comfort zone! This natural wonder allows you to see the beauty of nature's artistry up close, and snap some incredible photos for your memories.
Walk The Hanging Bridges
Hanging bridges offer a unique and immersive way to experience Costa Rica. These bridges offer close-up views of the forest's incredible biodiversity including a wide variety of plants, birds, and other wildlife - the perfect recipe for a breathtaking (and totally safe) adventure. Here are the top four places to have an unforgettable experience:
Treetopia Park
Treetopia Park has a total of six hanging bridges amongst the lush, green canopies, diverse wildlife, and features two waterfalls.
Selvatura Park
Situated next to the Santa Elena reserve, this park features 8 bridges that have the highest elevation point in the cloud forest.
100% Aventura Adventure Park
Walk across one of the park's 8 hanging bridges, and if you're looking for unique wildlife, opt to book a night tour!
Ecological Sanctuary
Offering a more secluded and tranquil experience, the bridges at the Ecological Sanctuary are perfect for those who want a peaceful hike and to avoid the larger crowds.
Pro Tip: Bring insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, sturdy shoes, and rain gear to ensure you're fully prepared for whatever weather comes your way.
Visit Curi-Cancha Reserve
This stunning sanctuary is located in the Arenal-Tempisque conservation area and protects 205 acres of ancient forest. There are seven kilometers of lush natural trails that allow visitors the opportunity to explore the unique flora and fauna of the forest. You can browse the trails freely, or take a guided tour with an expert who will point out the birds and mammals that call this place home.
It's a birdwatcher's paradise, so bring your binoculars and keep your eyes open for the three-wattled bellbird, blue-crowned motmot, and so many more! Enjoy your time wandering through the forest, but please remember to be respectful of the creatures who call this forest home. You might even spot some other native species like armadillos, two-toed sloths, and spider monkeys.
Soak in the Finca Lindora Hot Spring
One of the best and more unique things to do in Monteverde is to pay a visit to the Finca Lindora Hot Spring. Finca Lindora offers a unique, authentic experience right in the heart of Monteverde. What began as a simple family farm has evolved into an amazing tourist attraction that still produces milk and various crops.
This blend of tradition and tourism creates a peaceful and engaging atmosphere for visitors. The farm's highlights are guided horseback riding tours and a soothing hot spring nestled in the forest. Discover lush landscapes and rich flora and fauna on your way there. The spring is maintained at a warm temperature and is the perfect place to unwind and let any worries slip away.
Take a Chocolate or Coffee Tour
While you're in Monteverde, consider a coffee or chocolate tour - or both! The Cafe Monteverde Coffee Tour is for serious coffee enthusiasts. You'll get to witness the coffee production process from the bean to the cup, gain insight about sustainable farming practices, and taste delicious samples. El Trapiche is a family-run farm that offers a tour that focuses on coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane and gives you a more intimate and local experience.
Don Juan Coffee, Chocolate and Sugar Cane Tour is also another great option. This is one of the most highly recommended tours in Monteverde. It provides you with a hands-on journey from farm to table. You'll walk through the plantations, learn how the crops are harvested and processed, and of course, sample the delicious final product.
