When you think of vacationing in Greece, the landscapes of beautiful blue seas and historic cities probably come to mind. While these are both wonderful aspects of the country, Greece is also home to a number of magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are packed with fascinating Greek history. Acropolis of Athens
Built in the 5th century BC, The Acropolis of Athens is home to many ancient remains that depict the architectural and historical importance of Greece. One of the most important ruins still standing is the Parthenon, and visiting is one of the best things to do in Athens. Take a guided tour or explore by yourself to admire the breathtaking views when you reach the top. The Erechtheion, dedicated to the goddess Athena, sits proudly in The Acropolis, as well as the Panathenaic Stadium and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Additionally, the Acropolis Museum is home to many of the archaeological findings across the Acropolis.
Delos
Delos is a small island reachable by just a 30 minute ferry ride from Mykonos. A major religious center and port during the 1st millennium BC, the island is a small archaeological site containing Aegean history that dates back over 5,000 years. Considered to be one of the most important historical sites in Greece, you can opt for a guided tour or explore on your own. Wander around the temples, admire beautiful mosaics, and visit the Theatre Quarter that dates back to the 2nd century BC. It's here where you can see the House of Cleopatra, daughter of Adrastut of Myrrhinou. Though it was once a 12-room house with two open courtyards, you can still view the two headless statues inside the ruins that are said to be Cleopatra and her husband Dioscorides.
Medieval City of Rhodes
Nicknamed "the Island of Knights," Rhodes once stood as the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights for over 200 years. You can casually tour the mosques, castle walls, and well-preserved cobblestone streets while taking in the history. Dive into history at the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes which holds many unique finds from the Italian occupation along with jewelry and burial objects. While there are many restaurants and shops for you to explore within the walls, there are also tons of beautiful beaches in Rhodes to relax on.
Delphi Archaeological Site
The Delphi Archaeological Site is considered to be one of the most important historical sites in Greece. Dating back as early as the 2nd century BC, the site was originally an active place for religious activity that eventually added a theater, stadium, and temples – with the temple of Apollo being the most famous. Additionally, the Oracle of Delphi was one of the most powerful mythological institutions that now features a museum with Delphi artifacts on display.
Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus
This is one of the most fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greece, as it's one of the only places dedicated to the Greek gods of healing. During the Classical and Hellenistic periods, it was the main holy site of Asclepius and is an example of a typical "health center" in Ancient Greece. Explore around here and you'll witness hints of the emergence of modern medicine from all the way back to the 8th century BC.
