Walk through the streets of Spain to tour the lights, or view the decorations by bus. There are Christmas markets galore, selling everything from Spanish food to toys and ornaments. Madrid is filled with holiday cheer - here are 10 ways to make your travels festive.

1. San Silvestre Vallecana

Over 35,000 runners attend this race each year - and some run in costume! The race on December 31 is the largest sporting event in Spain. The races are almost entirely downhill, and there are two choices - a professional course or a fun run.

2. Christmas Light Walk

Madrid gets decked out in lights each holiday season, and there’s no better way to experience it than on a Christmas Light Walk. Fashion designers, graphic artists, and architects create grand light displays. The walking journey takes about an hour and a half, and the lights remain up through the month of December.

3. New Year’s Eve at Puerta del Sol

This New Year’s Eve, try one of Spain’s fun traditions - eating 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight! The grapes represent good luck for each month of the year. December 31, gather at Puerta del Sol to munch on grapes and party as the new year begins.
