Travel to Greece's Most Romantic Islands

By Sarah A. Lybrand

With amazing food, sunset views, and epic beaches, the Greek islands are perfect for traveling with that special someone.

If you enjoy the serene privacy of a quiet getaway with your lover, then Greece is definitely the way to go. Only trouble — good luck narrowing it down! Here are the most romantic islands in Greece:

Santorini

If you’re seeking a classic, luxury couple’s experience, Santorini would be the obvious choice. Infinity pools, spectacular views of the sunset, Champagne boat rides, and curated romantic experiences abound. Of course, the tradeoff is just as obvious: higher prices, crowds, and a more commercial feel. Should you seek an alternative to Santorini though, allow us to recommend a variety of spectacular alternatives.

Folegandros

There’s something special about Folegandros and it’s not just its sun-bleached clifftops, remote beaches, insane views, and friendly people — this gem of an island hasn’t really been discovered yet. Not far from Santorini or Ios, it’s also a destination that pairs well with other island-hopping destinations.

Milos

Milos is a perfect destination for couples who like exploring: the island’s geology rivals that of Santorini while at the same time, offering breathtaking, sandy beaches that aren’t (yet) packed with tourists. On top of that, Milos is known for its superb food, quaint villages, and colorful boats. Take a few days to rent a car or quad to see the more remote beaches on this gorgeous island.

Astypaleia

Halfway between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese is a remote, butterfly-shaped island that is the epitome of quiet. Perhaps it’s the 8-hour ferry ride from Athens that puts the island-hopping tourists off? For those who do brave the trip, an authentic Greek experience, away from all the crowds, parties, and people awaits.

Amorgos

Like Astypaleia, Amorgos is just far enough from Athens to keep the crowds at bay — but is a great trip to combine with Naxos or other close-by islands. Simple, quiet, even a little spiritual. You won’t find flashy, luxury resorts here. But Amorgos is a classic beauty with traditional vibes. Just try not to fall in love on Amorgos’s shores.

Samothrace

If you haven’t yet heard of Samothrace, there’s a reason: this is one of the least frequented, most remote of all the Greek islands (closer to Turkey than most other Greek Isles) — holding much appeal for hikers and nature lovers. Come for the waterfalls, seclusion, untouched scenery — and stay for the gorgeous backdrop of romance.

Naxos

Not a party island, Naxos is known for delicious food, incredible beaches, and suitability for families. It’s easy enough to avoid the kids if that’s not your thing (and on a romantic vacation with your honey, 'nuff said) but if you seek safe harbors and beaches, family-friendly activities, and a distinctly less rambunctious crowd, Naxos could be just the island for you.

Hydra

Just a 2-hour ferry ride from Athens, this famously vehicle-free isle uses donkeys as the main form of transport (you can even hike their footpaths around the island). It’s easy access to and from the capital and mainland that makes this chic, charming, bohemian destination perfect for lovers (and, we imagine former residents Leonard Cohen, and Sophia Loren would probably agree!)

Rhodes

This versatile Greek island is a popular spot for honeymooners, as it seems to have just a bit of everything: whitewashed villages, medieval streets, delicious restaurants, clusters of spectacular beaches, even an archaeological site (Lindos Acropolis). Another attractive feature is Rhode’s international airport, making this a convenient transportation hub from almost anywhere in the world.

Kefalonia

Representing the Ionian islands off the west coast of Greece, Kefalonia (sometimes spelled Cephalonia) is another perfect destination for couples. Somehow, Kefalonia has stayed off the radar — yet offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery and lush green surroundings (partially due to the Island losing many of its ancient Venetian buildings in a 1950’s earthquake).

Corfu

Corfu is nick-named Greece’s “Emerald Isle” — a distinctly lush, green island home to more than 3 million olive trees. Rent a scooter and ride around the island with your lover, stopping to picnic, take pictures, or have a drink at one of the many local tavernas where (notably) the local drink to try is kumquat liqueur.

Koufonisia

Consider Koufonisia if your idea of a perfect couples’ getaway involves chill beach bars, jeweled waters, and white sand. The accommodations here (one of three islands, only one inhabited) are cute and laid back, and often offer bike rentals or romantic boat rides.

Crete

The largest island in Greece, Crete is home to luxury resorts, blockbuster beaches, and ancient sites — which means that despite its popularity, the island still has a lot to offer couples. Not only are there endless things to do (sightseeing, shopping, spas, culture, food, etc.) but the island also boasts some of the best weather seasons in the Mediterranean, thanks to its southerly position in the Aegean. So if you’re looking for variety and luxury — outside Santorini, Crete is your clear choice.
