A Quick Guide to the World's Oldest Cities

We always hear about trendy new restaurants and pop-up shops. But when deciding where to travel, sometimes the best sights are the oldest! Each city is full unique of history, art, and culture. From Athens to Varanasi, here’s what you can do for fun in some of the world’s oldest locations!


1. Cádiz, Spain

Cádiz is Spain's oldest city, founded in 1100 BC! Cádiz is famous for its fresh fish caught daily, sandy stretches of beach, and striking architecture. La Caleta beach is a popular spot to spend a sunny day, or you can relax at a cafe and try to spot exotic birds! Make sure to visit Mercado Central de Abastos, the oldest covered market in Spain. Vendors have been selling delicious food there since 1838.


2. Athens, Greece

History is everywhere you look in Athens, Greece! When you visit, start at the Acropolis, where Athens was formed in 3000 BC. Then head to other ancient monuments, like the temple of Hephaestus, Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the Parthenon! If you’re looking to visit one of the most historic cities in the world, start here.


3. Faiyum, Egypt

Faiyum, Egypt, built between 1938–1756 BCE, used to be called “Crocodilopolis” after the God of crocodiles! The Yūsuf Canal winds through the city. This city also has Egypt’s only real waterfalls! Faiyum is an industrial hub where you can find locally sourced honey, olives, and figs! Visit the Pyramid of Amenemhat III, then visit a bustling marketplace to shop for souvenirs.


4. Waterford, Ireland

Vikings once ruled in Waterford, Ireland! Founded in 914 A.D., this town is full of artifacts and architecture. Check out ancient treasures at Reginald’s Tower, built in the 13th century! And for a modern day trip, stop into the House of Waterford Crystal, where several tons of molten crystal are shaped each day.


5. Varanasi, India

Not only is this one of the oldest cities in the world, but it is also considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists! Pilgrims come from miles away to bathe in the “holy river” near this City of Temples. The city is known for its incredible silk weavers, who sell their wares at bustling bazaars. Take a rickshaw ride around the 3,000-year-old city to see its unique architecture!


6. Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Built in 342 BC, this Bulgarian city contains many well-preserved historical sites! For a fun night out, listen to the opera the Ancient Theatre. Or visit a 16th-century Turkish bath, and check out the Creative District to buy local crafts. You’ll definitely want to try a glass of wine during your stay - the city is revered for its red grape vineyards!


7. Luoyang, China

Come to the city where Chinese civilization began - Luoyang was built in the first century! It's home to thousands of ancient Buddhist rock carvings. Make sure to visit the White Horse, an ancient Buddhist temple! And don’t miss The Longmen Grottoes, a group of thousands of ancient sculptures!


8. Lisbon, Portugal

Formed around 205 BC, this ancient city is a renowned vacation spot! Visit nearby beaches and enjoy the year-round balmy weather. Visitors rave about the medieval-era Belém Tower, and the historic Castle of São Jorge. Spend hours shopping at Praça do Comércio, or check out the famous Rossio monument!


9. Marseille, France

Marseille was founded around 600 BC, and has a rich history for you to delve into! Start by snapping some great pictures of Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. You’ll definitely want to visit the gorgeous fountains and architecture of Palais Longchamp. Spend an afternoon relaxing on a warm beach, then head to Musée des Docks Romains to find museum exhibits about Marseilles’ history.


10. Cagliari, Italy

Seek out an Italian city off the beaten track for a historic adventure! The medieval town of Cagliari was founded around 218-201 BC. There are many remnants of history to be seen, from the Bastione St. Remy to Cagliari Cathedral to the Cagliari Archaeological Museum.
