If you’re wondering where to start, here are some of the top beach destinations in Europe.
Portugal
Camilo Beach in Lagos is one of the best, most beautiful beaches in Portugal. Warm sparkling white sands are surrounded by sandstone cliffs, while shallow, crystal blue waters are perfect for snorkeling.
Top beaches in the Algarve include Amado Beach known for being remote and off-the-beaten-path, plus Martinhal Beach which is a great family-friendly beach. Guincho Beach near Lisbon is considered one of Europe's top-rated places for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Greece
One of the best beaches in Europe is Elafonissi Beach, a unique pink sand beach in Crete. Platis Gialos Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Mykonos, offering gorgeous white sands and direct buses to the Fabrika bus station in Mykonos Town.
If you're on a Santorini vacation, then visit Kamari Beach complete with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, and lifeguards. If you're looking for a more isolated beach in Santorini, then check out Cape Columbo Beach.
Spain
Spain has some incredible beaches, but some of the best can be found in Barcelona. Check out Sant Sevastia Beach and take in the gorgeous views of Barcelona's coastline, or head to Bogatell Beach to catch some waves. Sitting right next to the Port Olimpic, Nova Icaria Beach is the perfect place to hang out and grab a bite at one of the many surrounding restaurants.
Ibiza is one of the most popular beach cities in Spain also known for its vibrant nightlife and world-class restaurants. You can also enjoy golden sand beaches in Valencia like the popular Playa de Las Arenas and Playa de Pinedo.
Malta
Malta is filled with stunning beaches, starting with Surfside Beach in Sliema. Lay out in the sun and soak up some Vitamin D, or go for a swim in a rock-cut pool.
Just 15 minutes from Malta's capital Valletta, Balluta Bay Beach offers warm sands only steps away from the seafront promenade. There's also the dazzling Blue Lagoon on Comino Island, a not-so hidden gem in Malta that makes for an easy day trip activity.
Italy
From delicious cuisine and rich history to breathtaking landscapes, Italy truly has a ton of wonderful things to offer travelers. Among these landscapes are some of the world's most beautiful beaches.
Visit Viareggio Beach in northern Tuscany where there are sparkling blue shores or head to Lido di Jesolo which is the most popular beach in Venice. Over on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento provides some of the best beaches in Italy including Marina Piccola Beach and the free public Puolo beach.
Croatia
Famous for its gorgeous pebbled beaches and stunning coastlines, Croatia is another popular beach destination in Europe. Kastelet Beach is just 20 minutes from the center of Split and known for its shallow clear blue waters – making it a perfect for both experienced and non-swimmers.
Banje Beach is right next to the historic town of Dubrovnik and offers an incredible view of the city walls while you're taking a dip in the clear, shimmering seas.
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic might not be your first thought for a European beach destination, but it's worth considering! Surrounded by forests of pine trees and golden sands is Lhota Beach in Prague. This lake beach has floats or parasols to rent, and delicious food stands providing beach snacks.
For a lively beach near Prague, visit Smichov Beach for fun games, delicious drinks, and live entertainment like dance shows or concerts. With close proximity to Prague, it's the perfect beach to visit for a quick day trip.
Austria
Like the Czech Republic, Austria may not seem like an obvious choice for a beach destination, but it does have some hidden gems. Erlaufsee is a small lake beach near the village of Mariazell. Here you can swim, go on a paddle boat, or even scuba dive. Also consider Lido Beach in Salzburg which features soft sand, park benches, a tennis table, and a volleyball court.
