The Best Face Masks for Travel

By Soren Rivero

If you plan to travel in 2022, you’ll likely be asked to wear a mask. Most airlines require a face mask to board planes, and some countries require them to be worn even out in the open. If you’re going to be wearing one for such a long time, why not invest in one that’s best suited for your needs and style?

Here’s a short guide on how to find the best face masks for travel!

The Absolute Best Choice: N95

After years of being in this pandemic, the N95 face mask still reigns supreme as the best face mask one can use. These are the face masks that construction, medical, and lab workers use to protect themselves from harmful pathogens. They are now widespread throughout stores and available to the public, and also come in various different forms.

*Fun fact: Want to know what the 95 in N95 means? It’s quite simple actually! These masks filter out 95% of the tiny particles floating in the air. *

What About KN95s?

Some people ask whether KN95 vs. N95s are better. Depending on who you ask, you might get mixed information. However, what’s been uncovered is that they’re pretty much the same, except for a very minor difference. KN95s have been the standard medical mask in China and parts of Asia, whereas N95s are the standard medical mask in North American countries.

They pretty much function the same, and the U.S. has even deemed KN95s as suitable replacements for N95s. In the case for travel, you can consider them interchangeable.

Disposable Medical-Grade Masks

Disposable masks are the most common masks that you’ll see people wearing, and work fairly well at protecting you and others. Some are higher grades than others, and they’re even more effective when worn under a cloth mask.

The only downside to disposable masks is that they create a ton of pollution. There have even been reports of these masks finding their way into lakes and other habitats and choking animals with the ear loops. If you decide to use these, tear off the loops before disposing of them to avoid these issues!

Reusable Masks and Handmade Masks

Disposable masks are a nightmare for both fashionistas and environmentalists. Some hardly match with any outfit, and as aforementioned, are bad for the planet. Instead, opt for a reusable mask! They can be made in many different sizes, styles, and colors, and are easily washable – so they’re perfect for reuse.

Alternatives to Masks

We get it – not everyone enjoys wearing a mask all the time. Luckily, there are a few options you can use while traveling.

These include:

  • Double masks
  • Handmade or woven masks
  • Face shields
  • Clear face protectors
  • Thick scarves or shirts

Just be sure to check with your destination's local mandates and laws about which options are allowed!
