Maybe you want to take a romantic Valentine’s Day break. Or maybe you want to see Carnival in all of its glory. Either way, February is a great time to travel. From the orange groves of Sicily to the golden sunsets of Santorini, you'll love these eight places to visit in February. Who says the shortest month of the year can’t be just as fun?
While everyone descends upon Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, we suggest heading to the birthplace of carnival in Brazil: Salvador. This city of 2.9 million, known as capital of Bahia, is an intoxicating mix of African, Brazilian and Caribbean influences. From old-world architecture to delicious, seafood-heavy cuisine, Salvador is a fantastic place to get rid of winter blues and celebrate life with the locals.
British Columbia, Canada
If you fancy snow rather than sun, head to beautiful British Columbia. This westernmost province of Canada is chock full of exciting winter destinations, from the Canadian Rockies to Grouse Mountain. Hit the slopes at Whistler-Blackcomb, the biggest ski resort in North America, or take in the sights in cosmopolitan Vancouver.
See Kerala without the crowds. February is the end of peak season in India, which means you’ll have the region’s golden beaches, backwaters, tea and spice-covered mountains and serene national parks all to yourself. Wildlife lovers will go absolutely nuts for Kerala’s resident elephants, exotic birds and the odd tiger or two.
Feel your soul come alive in Sicily. Located just off the "toe" of Italy's "boot,” Sicily is an exciting mix of ancient ruins, modern cities, pistachio groves and bright blue coast. Visiting this Mediterranean island in February means you’ll see its iconic orange and lemon groves in full bloom. You can also take part in the festivities at Carnival of Sciacca, which has been recognized as the oldest festival in Sicily.
It’s the end of summer in New Zealand in February, so catch those last warm days as you explore the beauty of this country. See the gorgeous blossoms around Lake Tekapo and be amazed by the bubbling Champagne Pool in Rotorua. Since New Zealanders (known affectionately as Kiwis) will return to school and work, you won’t have to share those stunning vistas with anyone else - except maybe a sheep or two.
According to travel insiders, February is cheapest month of the year for airfare to Hawaii - so what are you waiting for? Whether the beaches of Maui or the coffee plantations of Kona are calling your name, Hawaii is a superb place for some old fashioned fun in the sun. Whale watchers are in luck: February is peak humpback whale-watching season!
Looking to travel to Asia in the winter but can’t decide where? Why not visit the melting pot that is Singapore? February is the least expensive time to visit this ritzy island state, which offers green spaces, larger than life skyscrapers and eclectic street food scene. Singapore is also home to one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations in the world taking place in February, so there’s really no better time to go.
Planning the ultimate romantic escape? We have one word: Santorini. As the one of the most romantic destinations in the world (as well as a great place to propose...), Santorini is about as picture perfect as it gets. Visiting in winter means you won’t have to fight off a horde of vacationers all vying for the same sunset pic.
