Copenhagen is a city that consistently tops the world's “most livable” lists, and it's easy to see why.

With its cobblestone streets of the old town and its sleek, sustainable architecture of the harbor, the capital of Denmark is seamlessly modernistic and timelessly cozy.

Local life is slow, intentional, and deeply connected to the outdoors, making for the perfect sojourn in any season. To help you out, we've put together a list of the best things to do in Copenhagen year-round.

Get started by exploring our Copenhagen vacations.

Spring (March through May)

As the city shakes off the final winter chill, spring in Copenhagen centers on blooming gardens and “udepils," which is the experience of sitting outside on a sunny day to enjoy a cold beer after a long winter.

Byhaven is an outdoor city garden that opens every spring in the courtyard of the music venue Pumpehuset. It's filled with communal tables, colorful lights, and a stage for free concerts. The bar serves delicious craft beers, natural wines, and cocktails, and is often accompanied by local food pop-ups.

If you're visiting in mid-April, a highlight of the city is the Sakura Festival where hundreds of cherry blossoms create a stunning pink canopy. For a local favorite, rent a powered GoBoat to picnic on the canals, or seek out local food markets like Reffen. Be sure to also stop by Tivoli Gardens to see their vibrant tulip gardens and awaken your inner child by exploring more than 30 fun rides throughout the park.

Summer (June through August)

Copenhagen truly shines in the summer, when the city embraces the long “white nights” and a vibrant outdoor culture. A quintessential experience is taking a dip in the clean harbor waters at the Island Brygge Harbour Bath or the newly anticipated water culture on Paper Island.

Music lovers can head to the Roskilde Festival or enjoy the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which fills the streets with live performances in July. For a historic expedition, visit Rosenberg Castle and, after exploring, have a picnic in the King's Garden. You can also explore the city by renting a bike, or join a social guided boat tour to see the illuminated landmarks after sunset. Summer in Copenhagen provides endless opportunities.

Autumn (September through November)

Autumn in Copenhagen is a season of golden hues and cultural depth. One of the most unique things to do in Copenhagen is to attend its Culture Night in October, when hundreds of museums, churches, government buildings, and other places you wouldn't usually have access to open their doors for one night of exclusive events. As the air turns crisp, the city embraces the concept of hygge within its cozy cafes and candlelit restaurants. Take a stroll through the Botanical Garden and immerse yourself in the fiery fall foliage, or head to Torvehallerne food hall and cozy up with a hot cocoa and a delicious pastie.

Art and history lovers will love the huge halls of the National Gallery of Denmark, while Deer Park is a great place to go to witness herds of majestic stags amongst the changing leaves, perfectly capturing the spirit of autumn in Copenhagen.

Winter (December through February)

If you want a true magical winter wonderland experience, winter in Copenhagen is the place to be. With glowing lights, a reverberating festive spirit, and snow-dusted parks, you'll discover the heart of a Nordic winter. Visit Frederiksberg Garden and glide across the ice at Frederiksberg Runddel skating rink (located inside the garden).

Head to CopenHill to ski down an artificial slope, or dive into the Danish tradition of winter swimming followed by a steaming sauna session at a local spa. Browse the various holiday markets in the city squares like Højbro Plads, and warm up with a glass of spicy gløgg – a Danish spiced mulled wine with warm spices, raisins, and blanched almonds.
