Best Months Overall: April, May, September, October

In general, Italy sees some of its best weather patterns in the months of April, May, September and October - often considered "shoulder season". In April and October, you'll usually find comfortable, not-too-cold temperatures and fewer tourists. These are great times to visit the most popular attractions in big cities that draw large crowds in high season.

May and September offer warmer temperatures, absent the blistering heat that the summer months can bring. These months are perfect for walking tours and active sightseeing amongst smaller crowds than you'll find in the peak summer months.

Best Times For Good Weather: Late Spring, Summer, Early Fall

If you're a sun-seeker, then summer will be the best time to visit Italy due to its mostly rain-free climate and relatively high temperatures. These conditions make it ideal for spending days along the Amalfi Coast, or lounging poolside with a spritz.

However, late spring and early fall are also excellent times to visit due to the comfortable weather. For those who don't enjoy sky high temperatures, this time period may be ideal. Walking tours, days in nature, and even beach-lounging are all still doable during this time of the year as well. This is a great time to visit various iconic landmarks such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Duomo in Florence.

Best Times To Avoid Crowds: Winter Months

It goes without saying that the winter months (or "low season") are generally the least busy of the year for travel – and Italy is no exception. As such, it's the best time to visit Italy to avoid crowds. While most visitors travel to Italy during the summer, to experience its warm Mediterranean climate, there are many reasons to explore Italy in the winter.

More specifically, Northern Italy is a perfect place to venture if you fancy some time in the Alps, just be mindful that ski season is in session. Alternatively, if you choose to spend your time in city centers such as Rome or Venice, you can expect less crowded piazzas, lower-priced hotels, and vibrant holiday markets. Even in the winter months, check the calendar for festivals or cultural events (such as Carnival) that may impact pricing and availability. Keep in mind that the daylight hours are shorter and some businesses may be temporarily closed or have reduced opening hours (particularly in coastal regions).

Best Seasons To Visit: Spring, Fall

Spring and fall are among the best times to visit Italy. Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds in touristy areas, and best of all – cheaper prices. With summer generally the busiest time, other seasons usually offer better rates and opportunities for travelers to save.

As such, many hotel rates, flight prices, and ticket prices for popular attractions decrease in the low and shoulder seasons – making a trip to Italy a perfect option during these times.

Keep in mind that Italy has many diverse regions and climates; the best time to visit may depend greatly on what part of the country you're visiting and what activities you're interested in. A trip to the Alps or northern cities is a very different one from a trip to Sicily or Sardinia - the weather, crowds and temperatures vary greatly across the country. One thing is for sure though, any trip to Italy will be a great one!
