Spend time at Sliema Beach

Since Malta is graced by the Mediterranean’s near-perfect climate, the beaches are always a solid option to visit year-round. While Sliema beach is more on the rockier side than others on the island, the waters are still warm and inviting for those who enjoy snorkeling and simply want to go for a dip. As a resort town, the beaches in the city are also accompanied by a bunch of beach clubs for those who want to sip cocktails and enjoy the views.

Swim in Victorian tidal pools

The coast of Sliema is filled with several man-made tidal pools that locals have dubbed “Roman Baths.” These square-shaped pools were developed sometime in the 17th century and are now considered one of the best things to do in Malta. The baths are cleverly carved alongside one another and link to the city’s drainage systems to avoid flooding. If you spend time at the promenade, you will encounter the popular baths of Font Ghadir Beach.

Visit Manoel island

Just a bridge away from the city of Sliema is Manoel Island. Formerly known as Bishop Island, this intriguing isle is situated right in the middle of Marsamxett Harbour and is filled with several heritage sites and landmarks. One of which includes Fort Manoel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once served as the fortification against enemy forces during the French invasion of Malta, the Siege of Malta, and World War II. Visitors can also snap breathtaking photos of nearby cities such as Sliema, Valletta, and Gzira.

Churches of Sliema

Historically known as a religious city of sorts, Sliema is home to several churches and places of worship. Many of these have become popular attractions that offer in-depth tours of each structure. Additionally, guests are welcome to stop in and enjoy a service during their days of operation. A few great locations to visit include the Stella Maris Parish Church, the Jesus of Nazareth Parish Church, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish Church.

Visit St. Julian’s Tower

Initially built by the Order of Saint John in 1658 to protect St. Julian’s Bay, Saint Julian’s Tower stands tall today as a landmark and a restaurant. That’s right, visitors can explore what’s left of this important structure before enjoying delicious Maltese food at the It-Torri Restaurant below. While discovering the beauty of this watchtower, feel free to capture amazing photos of the surrounding landscape.

Day trip to Comino Blue Lagoon

With Sliema located in a rather convenient spot on the main island, it’s easy to access transportation between other great places to visit in Malta, like Gozo and Comino. Keeping that in mind, a day trip to Comino is easy when you visit Sliema, especially since the ferry ride is only about 30 minutes long. One of the most popular natural attractions on the isle Comino is the gorgeous blue lagoon. The waters here are shallow and family-friendly, so visitors can swim around safely.

Discover Fort Tigne

Similar to St. Julian’s Tower, Fort Tigne was built by the Order of Saint John between 1793 and 1795 to protect Marsamxett Harbour. The fort is one of the oldest polygonal forts in Europe and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Up until 1979, the fort was utilized for military operations and was maintained by the British. Today, the structure remains intact, surrounded by landscaped gardens and paved walkways. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the bay while embracing the Mediterranean breeze.

Explore the promenade

There’s no better way to experience the best parts of Malta than spending time at the Sliema promenade. Enjoy the abundance of high-end restaurants, luxury retailers, exclusive boutiques, and cute cafes while perusing the area. A relatively active and busy area, you’ll find locals jogging or cyclists strolling along the promenade’s scenic boardwalk. Feel free to start your day here with brunch or end the day by watching the sunset and indulging in your favorite flavor of gelato.
