Sacre Coeur, Montmartre

Admire the Basilica's architecture

You would have seen the Sacré Coeur dome on your travels through Paris. Time to see it up close. As you observe this brilliant architectural monument, be sure to look up and spot the two green plated horses upon which Joan of Arc and King Saint Louis IX sit. The fully glory of Paris is on a visual platter from Montmartre. As you meander the cobblestone streets of Montmartre, you may well hear the sounds of franco-jazz musicians with accordions ringing out a distinctly upbeat tune, creating a entertaining vibe that Montmartre is known for. Back in the 1800s painters, writers, musicians, sculptors, and architects would gather in the cafes and bars drinking Absinthe and using its uplifting qualities to propel their ideas into inspiring works. Gaughin, Cezanne, Renoir, and Vincent Van Gogh all painted from Montmartre.

Local Cafes and Patisseries

Enjoy Parisian life in Montmartre's cafes

Be sure to sit and relax in a Montmartre cafe, watch the locals and tourists enjoy this musical and artistic district. Schedule a visit to the Musee de Montmartre, and see where Auguste Renoir, Suzanne Valadon, and Émile Bernard worked from. The house will give you a sense of life in the 1870s in Paris. One of our favorite paintings of Montmartre is The Bal du Moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1876) which shows a Sunday afternoon dance in Montmartre. In the main square of Montmartre, you can enjoy having your portrait sketched in pencil for under 100 Euros. It’s a wonderful momento to hang on your wall at home. A small price to pay for the memory of your travels to Montmartre.

Funiculaire de Montmartre

After a leisurely lunch in one of Montmartre’s many cafes, you can enjoy the funicular rail or walk down to the famous Moulin Rouge where the Can Can Dance originated from. The iconic posters drawn by artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created an era of cabaret in Paris which spread across Europe by the late 1890s. If you have time, the cabaret dance show is well worth buying a ticket for which includes refreshments. Travel back in time to when the Moulin Rouge defined Paris and enjoy the richness of performing arts in Paris.
