By Jessica Russo

Gyros, pronounced "yee-ros" in Greece, are savory bundles of joy wrapped up in fresh pita. This Greek staple is an all-time favorite, and no trip to Athens would be complete without trying one.

Stuffed with fillings like chicken, lamb, veggies, and - let us never forget - the ever-delicious tzatziki, gyros are pronounced like "heroes" for a reason. Here are our favorite spots to snag an authentic gyro in Athens.

This go-to "souvlatzidiko" prepares its meat fresh every morning, and closes when it runs out! Serving up mouthwatering family recipes since the 1980s, O Kostas is hard to beat. Since it's such a beloved local hot-spot, we recommend getting there early. If there is a line (which there probably will be), it's worth the wait - we promise.
