One of Europe’s hottest cities

With its wide array of things to enjoy, from an abundance of rich historical attractions and vibrant nightlife to exquisite food and nearby beaches, it’s no wonder why Lisbon is one of the best places in Europe to visit. It was even nominated by the World Travel Awards as Europe's Leading City Break Destination in 2024, and won the title of World's Leading Heritage City Destination in 2024. Whether you want to dance to the sounds of fado music or marvel at sweeping views from charming hilltop neighborhoods, Lisbon is a dynamic city with something for every traveler.

Fascinating history and landmarks

Since Lisbon is the second oldest city in Europe (just behind Athens), it’s natural that it would be filled with incredible historical attractions and stunning architecture. Explore Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, with its labyrinthine streets boasting traditional restaurants and panoramic city views. Be sure to visit some of the amazing UNESCO Sites in Lisbon, including Belém Tower and the neighboring Jerónimos Monastery, and admire the exquisite Gothic architecture of Monastery of Alcobaça.

Great weather with tons of sun

Did you know that Lisbon is the third sunniest city in Europe? With over 290 days of sun each year and a pleasant climate year-round, it’s a great place to visit in Europe to escape the cold and embrace the warmth. Though summer boasts the hottest temperatures, spring and fall are still enjoyable, hovering around 65°F - 72°F, while winter averages about 59°F. It's important to note though that during these shoulder seasons, travelers are able to experience smaller crowds and more affordable travel rates.

Outstanding cuisine

A melting pot of various cultures, it’s no surprise that Lisbon (and Portugal in general) is a place of mouthwatering food and drinks. Be sure to try some of the city’s exquisite seafood dishes, like the popular bacalhau (salted cod) or even pasteis de bacalhau (cod fritters). Other staple dishes in Lisbon you should try include porco preto (Iberian black pork), polvo à lagareiro (octopus with olive oil and potatoes), and of course, the world-famous pastéis de nata (egg-yolk custard tart). Thirsty? Don’t leave the city without trying some wines from Lisboa or the Douro regions!

Well-located to explore other destinations

Positioned on the Iberian-Atlantic coast, Lisbon is a great base for exploring more of Portugal. The city has multiple major train stations that can easily transport you around the country, whether you want to venture north to Porto or head south to the beaches of the Algarve. Speaking of beaches, there are multiple near Lisbon that you can reach by car or train, such as the beaches of Costa da Caparica or Oeiras. One of the best day trips from Lisbon, though, has to be to fairy-tale Sintra, with its magical Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and beautiful National Park.
