Day 2. Istanbul
After breakfast, set off for some sightseeing in Istanbul. You could start with a visit to the renewed Sultanahmet Mosque (known as The Blue Mosque), an incredibly beautiful mosque known for its blue Iznik (Nicaea) tiles, and unique for the fact that it has six minarets. Continue on to the Hippodrome - once a vast arena that functioned as the heart of sporting events (chariot races and athletics) and political activities of the old city.
From there, consider a visit to the nearby Hagia Sophia, or the Church of Divine Wisdom. Ranking as one of the greatest marvels of world architecture, this awe-inspiring building was constructed as a basilica in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian.
After finding yourself a delicious lunch, head over to Topkapi Palace, which for more than 400 years was the imperial residence of the Ottoman Sultans. Now it is home to priceless collections of porcelain, jewelry, calligraphy and many masterpieces of art.Â
Day 3. Istanbul
Start the day with the visit to the Spice Market. Built in 1664, this storied building includes a large number of shops. This collection of shops was actually part of the complex of the adjacent Yeni Camii. Since its construction, the Egyptian Spice Market has specialized in the sale of exotic spices.
Today, these lovely small shops continue to sell spices and now also sell dried fruits, nuts, seeds, and other edibles. Some of the shops are gradually being transformed into shops featuring jewelry and other luxury items.Â
Day 4. Istanbul
Today you have a full day to explore the exotic city of Istanbul! And there is no shortage of fascinating sights and experiences you can uncover. Shop for souvenirs at the many bazaars, peruse the historical and contemporary museums, enjoy a traditional Turkish bath (or hammam), sample the sumptuous cuisine, and marvel at the magnificent architecture reflected in the many churches, mosques, castles, and palaces that dot the city!
Day 5. Istanbul
Take it easy today with a picnic at Gulhane Park! Swing by a local market for supplies like wine, cheese, and fruit, then hit the idyllic spot.
After, why not catch the sunset from the Galata Bridge?
