How Does a Beach Become Blue Flag Certified?
There is a list of criteria that a beach must meet to be eligible for the Blue Flag award. Once receiving the award, the beach must stick to and maintain the criteria.
This criteria includes but is not limited to:
- Information about the Blue Flag Program needs to be displayed in clear sight on the beach.
- The beach must provide and promote environmental education activities to beach visitors.
- Ensure appropriate public safety control measures, services, and environmental management.
- Information pertaining to the local ecosystems must be shown.
- The beach and surrounding area must have all code of conduct laws governing their use prominently exhibited.
- The beach is required to fully adhere to the standards and requirements set by the Blue Flag organization for analyzing water quality.

What's the Importance of the Blue Flag?

What's the History of the Blue Flag?
The award was created by the FEE in 1987 and was given to some shoreline towns in France that had the best practices in maintaining safe bathing water quality and good sewage treatment.
Years earlier in France, students participated in a unique project where they wrote their names and the nearest beach on messages placed inside plastic bottles. These bottles were gathered by the military and flown out to sea. Later, they were released into the ocean, traveling along various coastlines to demonstrate the repercussions that ocean littering has on communities globally.
The message bottles had a logo that was a blue flag with three waves, and a bottle on top of the waves. The French eventually turned it into an eco-friendly label, thus creating the start of the Blue Flag Program which is now extended worldwide.
