Free Things to Do in Budapest

By Kenya Barrett

Budapest, also known as the “Pearl of the Danube,” is the capital city of Hungary and one of the most historically important cities in the world. If you’re visiting this gem on a budget, check out these best free things to do in Budapest!

Walk along the Chain Bridge

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge connects the western and eastern sides of Budapest spanning the River Danube between Buda and Pest. It's a hugely symbolic structure of the city and walking across is considered one of the best things to do in Budapest, as it provides visitors with stunning city views. Consider coming at night when the bridge is beautifully illuminated against the dark sky.

Wander around the Great Market Hall

Initially built in 1897, the Great Market Hall has remained a popular attraction in the center of Hungary’s capital. While the products are sold at a fee by vendors, attendees are allowed to visit the hall free of charge. This market is unique because visitors have three floors of goods to explore. Whether you’re in the mood for cheeses and wine or fresh produce such as fruits and meats, guests are bound to leave with a Hungarian culinary delight.

Visit Szabo Central Library

The Szabo Central Library is perhaps one of most ancient hidden gems in Budapest, and visiting is totally free! During the 19th century, the structure first served as the mansion of Count Friges Wenckheim, a notable Hungarian aristocrat. In 1931, Budapest’s City Council bought the building and slowly converted the neo-baroque palace into a public library. Today, the structure serves as the largest library in the city and is home to over one million volumes of books.

Go for a stroll in City Park

If you’d like to reconnect with nature within the city limits, consider going for a walk through the iconic City Park. In centuries past, the park was the main venue for many of Hungary’s celebrations. Currently, the park is made up of 11 different areas including a restaurant, zoo, botanical garden, museum, and even a section dedicated to medicinal baths and a pool. Other points of interest within the park are the Vajdahunyad Castle and Heroes Square.

Unwind on Margaret Island

Another great place to explore in the urban jungle of Budapest is Margaret Island, located in the middle of the Danube River and easily accessible by tram. While some of the island's attractions require a fee for entry, simply exploring is a fun free thing to do in Budapest. Activities on the island include swimming pools, thermal spas, walking trails, a musical fountain, small zoo, and more.

Explore the Roman ruins in Pest and Obuda

During the 1st century, the Roman Empire established a civilization in present-day Budapest, which are now mostly ruins scattered throughout the city. A few of the landmarks that make up these ruins include the fortress Contra Aquincum, the Roman Civilian Amphitheatre, and the Roman Military Amphitheatre. Perhaps the most remarkable is the Aquincum, which features a museum and open-air park. While these attractions are not free, travelers are free to enjoy the view from the nearby street.
