Day 1. Welcome to Umbria!
Pick up your car at the airport, check into your hotel, and enjoy your first night in Italy at leisure. With so many restaurants, cafes, and bars nearby, it's difficult to avoid the siren call of venturing out!
Featuring 29 unique rooms, the Castello Di Baccaresca makes for a perfect Italian fairytale getaway. It's easy to get lost in the more than 600 acres of lush Italian countryside. The castle dates back to the twelfth century and has recently been restored to provide luxurious accommodations for guests.
It's easy to soak up the sun while taking in gorgeous views of Umbria. This hotel features an outdoor swimming pool in the center of a garden. Additional amenities include air conditioning, free wifi, and an onsite spa. The hotel offers free breakfast and a full service restaurant in addition to a bar/lounge area.
Take a step back into Medieval Italian history for a unique experience like no other at the Abbazia Collemedio Resort & Spa. Set in the small town of Collazzone, Collepepe (Perugia) and tucked amidst rolling Umbrian hills in the green heart of Italy, this unique resort was once a Benedictine Abbey.
Restored from its historical use and converted into a modern hotel, the Abbazia Collemedio Resort & Spa offers a traditional Italian setting straight out of a travel guide. Now updated with modern convenience, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a gym are available for use at your leisure.
Please note: The hotel is located approximately 25 minutes by car from Umbria International Airport (PEG), approximately one hour 50 minutes by car from Ciampino Airport (CIA), and approximately two hours by car from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO).
Day 2. Umbria
Take the day to really head out to the heart of the country! Enjoy a local winery tour and tasting! This is a perfect way to get a real taste of local life.
Explore the green heart of Italy and indulge in the decadence of your surroundings. From truffle foraging and stunning vineyards, spend the day finding culinary excellence at your leisure.
Arnaldo Caprai Winery Tour & Tasting
Enjoy a wine tasting at the Arnaldo Caprai Winery, an acknowledged leader in the production of top quality Sagrantino di Montefalco. This wine is produced exclusively from grapes of Sagrantino, a variety that has been growing in the Montefalco region for more than 400 years. The vineyard lies amid the Apennines and the towns of Trevi, Assisi, Spello and Montefalco, all famous for olive oil and wine production.
Enjoy a tour of the vineyards and the wine cellar, followed by a tasting of three wines, olive oil, and other accompaniments.
Day 3. Umbria
Indulge in a cheese tasting at Podere il Casale today! After, you may enjoy a visit to the town that's the only exception to Umbria's rolling hills: Bevagna. This cobbled-street town sprawls out over a small plain. It remains home to mosaics and the ruins of a temple and amphitheater, as well as offering beautiful stone squares and a lovely walk through its narrow streets.
Podere il Casale Cheese Tasting (AM)
Visit Podere il Casale, an organic farm and restaurant in Pienza. Tour the farm, meet the animals and learn about their farming and producing methods (including a visit to the dairy). Later, have a glass of wine and try some of the farm's famous cheese as you enjoy the stunning view of Val d’Orcia, either from the terrace or in the former cow-stable-turned-dining-room. Enjoy an explanation of each of the products served, including different raw milk cheeses, homemade bread and extra virgin olive oil from their own trees.
Day 4. Umbria
A wine tasting at Castello di Meleto awaits!
After, you may want to set out to explore Umbria's capital, Perugia. With its unique structure, charming atmosphere, and beautiful architecture that is reminiscent of Old Italy and European fairy tales, the historic city offers winding streets to walk and many hills to climb.
With the whole day to explore, you could even take a little bit of a longer trip to Rome, which is only an hour and a half away and offers another plethora of activities and sights to see.
Wine Tasting at Castello di Meleto
Experience an authentic tasting of Chianti wines at the enchanting Castello di Meleto, which dates back to the 13th century. Within the original, vast old cellar of the castle at the end of a stone path hollowed through stone and past an original “secret passageway” is the large tasting room, where you'll enjoy a flight of 3 wines produced onsite.
Taste such acclaimed wines as the Meleto Chianti Classico Docg, Vigna Casi Chianti Classico Docg Riserva and Borgaio IGT Toscana Rosso - accompanied by crackers, bread and the organic extra virgin olive oil produced at the Castle.
Day 5. Umbria
Consider taking a day trip to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy's patron saints. You don't have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of this town. With a backdrop of rolling green hills, Assisi is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world.
Day 6. Depart Italy
Pack your souvenirs, drop off your car, and say goodbye to Italy.
