Today, enjoy a half-day tour taking you to the famous Acropolis and its sister museum housing the archaeological findings uncovered from the Acropolis.
After your tour, visit the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a stone theater structure located at the base of the Acropolis. The theater was built during Roman times around 161 A.D. by the Roman philosopher, teacher and politician Herodes Atticus in memory of his late wife. Live performances are still held there today.
At night, head to the charming neighborhood of Plaka for a traditional Greek meal of moussaka, a mediterranean casserole layered with ground meat, bechamel, eggplant and potatoes.
Athens Sightseeing Tour (with Acropolis)
Discover the secrets of Athens, including its famous Acropolis on your sightseeing tour! Your expert guide will take you to see the center of the city, the Constitution Square (Syntagma), the House of Parliament, the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier and the National Library.
On your way to the Acropolis you will see the Hadrian’s Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and will make a short stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896.
On the Acropolis visit the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and finally the famous Parthenon.
Your first taste of Athens would not be complete without a visit to the Acropolis Museum, a modern architectural building where, at last, the statues have found their home. Here, you can admire the wonders and architectural masterpieces of the classical era.
Day 3. Athens
Start the day with a walk up Philopappos Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses. See the marble monument to Philopappos, a Greek-Syrian nobleman who served as a Roman consul, then admire the incredible views of the Acropolis, Mount Lycabettus and out to the Saronic Gulf.
North of the Philopappos monument is the small rocky hill of Pnyx, where Athenian citizens and orators like Pericles, Themistocles and Demosthenes held court. It's widely believed that the notion of modern democracy was born right here!
End your day with a visit to the palm-tree lined National Gardens and the Panathenaic Stadium in Mets, a neighborhood in eastern Athens.
Day 4. Athens
Explore the Ancient Agora today! Literally meaning "gathering place," the Agora was the central public space in classical Greece used for sport, art, and political gatherings. Wander the sprawling grounds as you imagine what life would have been like in ancient Athens.
While at the Agrora, don't miss the marble Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best preserved ancient temples in Greece. Named after the patron god of fire, the temple was an orthodox church from the 7th century A.D. up until 1834.
After a healthy dose of Greek history, head to the vibrant neighborhood of Monastiraki for a glass of Greek wine and a soulvaki or greek salad.
Day 5. Athens
Spend the morning museum hopping between two of Athens' finest. Start at Benaki Museum housed in the Benaki family mansion in downtown Athens. The museum is home to Greek art from the prehistoric era up to present day. Then visit the Museum of Cycladic Art to see art from the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, where an ancient civilization flourished between 3300 and 200 B.C.
After art hopping, head to Plaka for a little retail therapy. Pick up a pair of handmade leather sandals or a bottle of Greek honey to take home for yourself!
Day 6. Depart Athens
Today you will depart Athens for your flight home. Grab one last look at the Grecian ruins before heading off.
